it is a file that has a list of the files and a unique fingerprint of thsoe files. so an md5 can be 'run' and it compares what is in that file list (the 'packing list' if you will) to the actual files to make srue they match exactly and are an extact replica of the orignal files of when the md5 was created.
i don't hitnk you have to have a md5 for flac files, but i think you do have to have a fingerprint file... read this too:

No MD5 file necessary when uploading Flacs, and no FFP file necessary either. However, if you want to get emails about which tracks are failing, you have to include an MD5 file. That said, right now the MD5 checker isn't sending email - until I fix it, hopefully this week.
